After two unsuccessful attempts to sign the powerful Dutch international, Bayern finally landed their man in August 2006. The combative player was brought on board to add steel to the heart of the Bayern midfield, provide a pivot between attack and defence, guide and assist a clutch of younger players, and contribute goals whenever possible. In living up to those expectations, Van Bommel provided one of the bright spots in a disappointing 2006-7 at Bayern, but he is now more than ever determined to collect silverware with the club which he rated as his favourite team even as a child. |
