Daniel van Buyten
Daniel van Buyten began to stand out from the Bundesliga crowd with his switch to Hamburg in 2004, and not merely because of his towering 1.96m / 6ft 5 in frame. Then HSV boss Klaus Toppmöller recognised the Belgian’s absolute will to win and immediately named him captain, a favour Daniel repaid with a string of commanding performances as Hamburg marched to a surprise third place in 2005-6. That prompted Bayern to bring the likeable colossus to Munich, where he settled in immediately. “I’m a winner, and I’m at a club which always plays to win. I’ve come here to keep on winning,” Van Buyten declared. Silverware proved elusive in his first term with Bayern and injury ruined the latter part of his season, but Daniel is determined to remedy that omission in the 2007-8 campaign.
